Pierre Bourlier offers a fresh look and overview of Wilhelm Reich’s thought (1897-1957). Reich, a seminal influence on the student rebels of 1968 and founder of a political movement for sexual emancipation, was a psychoanalyst but also a biologist. Bourlier captures Reich’s original conception of life, spontaneity and sensitivity, whilst reflecting on his contradictions and underlining how emblematic his thought is of the ideological tendencies in our culture: enthusiasm for reductive science, mechanisation and medicalisation of existence. He shows that subordination to technological and scientific progress is deeply intertwined with the need for irrational experiences, mystical forms of liberation and “personal development” that we see all around us.
